How To Propose

PLANNING A SURPRISE PROPOSAL

A Guide To Surprise Proposals

Popping the question is an exciting and unforgettable moment but choosing a surprise ring can feel daunting. From figuring out the right size to selecting the perfect style, here’s a guide to help you navigate this special decision with confidence.

Surprise Proposal - Engagement Rings
Choosing the Perfect Style

Metal Preference

Take note of the jewellery your partner usually wears. Do they prefer yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold?  Some metals complement certain skin tones better than others. We can create our designs in any metal colour – so do let us know if you’d like this to be customised.

Gemstones, Diamond or No Stone?

Would they love a diamond, or do they have a favourite gemstone? Consider the colours that they love and how they might translate into a ring design. If they favour a more minimal look – consider how to ensure that the final gemstone is pared back. You can read more about choosing your gemstone here.

Consider The Wedding Band

It’s traditional to wear engagement and wedding rings together, so it’s worth considering early how the engagement ring will stack with a wedding band. We can create a bespoke ring to fit neatly against the engagement design in your choice of metals or finish.

Overall Aesthetic

Think about their personal style. Do they love bold statement pieces or prefer delicate, understated designs? A large central stone, wide band or a statement setting style might appeal to those who love dramatic jewellery, whereas a petite or minimal ring would suit those with a more subtle aesthetic.

Finding the Right Ring Size

The most accurate way to determine their ring size is by having their finger measured at our studio. But if a surprise proposal is your goal, don’t worry - there are alternative methods:

  • Use an existing ring: Borrow a ring that fits the intended finger and bring it to us (or an alternative professional jeweller) for measurement.
  • Measure it yourself: We can send you our ring sizing kit to help you assess the size accurately.
  • Don’t worry: Purchase one of our ready to ship designs created in our standard sizing.  We include an initial free re-size with all of designs to make this process less stressful.
Alternative Ways To Propose
  • Propose with a promise ring: Consider giving a more minimal solitaire or promise ring which can work in a stack with the final engagement design – or be worn separately once the final design is developed.
  • Create a mood board: Gather inspiration for stone options, ring styles, metal choices.  Work on this together with your partner – or present it to them as part of your proposal as a warm up for the final design.
